Uncle Ian

The first time I remember meeting Ian was when he visited my parents family home, which at that time was in Surrey when Ian was wearing his military uniform, while doing his national service. All I remember from that visit was that I was most impressed to have a soldier in the family!! Ian remained a regular visitor to my parents home through my school days and adolescences. He was always willing and remembered for helping with schoolwork and advice and when the time came, to helping my brother and myself in learning to drive. Ian also, I remember, could lightly touch on views different to my parents, which all became part of us growing up. Ian was the consummate teacher, but never imposed his views, but provided support.

Ian was kind and considerate and remained so all of his life.

I married while working overseas and eventually returned to work in the UK. As sometimes happens my mother found it difficult accepting my married status and wife, while Ian who by this time was known in the family as "uncle Ian" provided the main stay for the family relationship for Youngwha and in some ways made up for what my Mother could not provide. Youngwha will always remember him for this. Youngwha remembers Ian liked nothing more than to sit perhaps in a coffee shop in the sunshine, with Ian talking wisely, gossiping in the nicest way and watching people stroll by. Ian genuinely liked people.

Over the years Ian joined us, which eventually included my three daughters at our home and for holidays in Hong Kong and France. In later years Ian provided the same guidance and example to my daughters as he had done with me and would have continued this, I am sure, with my grandchildren as well, if Parkinson's had not cruelly intervened.

We will all remember Ian and will sadly miss him.
